    Elsley Primary School

    English (Phonics)

At Elsley Primary School, we recognise the importance of Phonics as the foundation of reading and writing. Our Phonics program is designed to help children decode words, develop their spelling, and build the skills necessary for fluent reading. We use a systematic approach that ensures each child makes steady progress, gaining confidence in their ability to read and write independently. We are proud of our Phonics teaching, which supports every child’s literacy journey, making sure they have the tools they need to succeed in all areas of learning.

"I love Phonics because it helps me read big words all by myself!"

Following an extensive review of our current practice and the government's revised core criteria for effective systematic synthetic phonics teaching programmes, Elsley has updated its approach to teaching phonics.
