    Elsley Primary School

    PSHE & RSE

P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education)

At Elsley Primary School, PSHE is integral to the development of well-rounded, responsible, and resilient young people. Our PSHE curriculum covers essential topics such as emotional well-being, relationships, health, and citizenship, equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate life’s challenges. We are proud of the supportive and inclusive environment our PSHE program creates, where students feel safe to explore their thoughts and feelings, develop empathy, and grow into confident, caring individuals.

    R.S.E. (Relationship Sex Education)

We are required to teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) as part of our PSHE curriculum.  High quality RSE helps create a safe school community in which our pupils can grow, learn and develop positive, healthy behaviour for life.

We are currently undergoing parent consultations in which you are able to view online resources that explain the curriculum changes. Please watch the video below and have a look at the documents at the bottom of this page to find out more information.

"I like PSHE because we talk about our feelings and how to be kind to others!"

    Intent Statement

At Elsley Primary School, we aim to provide a PSHE curriculum that enables our pupils to be respectful citizens who live physically healthy and emotionally healthy lives.

Our intention is that when pupils leave Elsley Primary School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to become positive role models in today’s diverse society. We have a diverse community and adopt an attitude in which we want each our pupils to feel valued, respected and safe. At Elsley, we want all pupils to have a positive mind set and high aspirations to achieve to their very full potential.  We celebrate individuality, achievements and talents and we inspire pupils to have high aspirations to strive to reach their personal best. In an ever changing world, we want our pupils to become self-aware of risks that may be presented to them and develop the knowledge of how to deal with these so they are able to acquire good mental health and well-being.

Our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum aims to provide our pupils with the opportunity to experience a broad and balanced curriculum that allows pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It will enable pupils to access the wider aspects of the curriculum and prepare them for their future roles within a global community. It prepares them for their later responsibilities in life and promotes spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development. Our Relationships and Sex Education is tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the pupils which enables our pupils to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

    Implementation Statement

    EYFS

PSED and citizenship is taught through integral topic work and embedded throughout aspects of the Early Years curriculum. Objectives within this curriculum area are covered through the PSED statements in the ‘Development Matters in EYFS’ guidance in relation to the Early Learning Goals and the non-statutory ‘Birth to 5 Matters’ guidance.

    KS1 & KS2

In KS1 and KS2, PSHE is taught through a comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.

At Elsley, our PSHE curriculum is taught in 3 lessons per half term. Lessons are taught through a bespoke medium term plan that has been developed from the PSHE Association and is tailored to the context of our school and needs of our pupils. The medium term plan provides a progressive scheme in a spiral curriculum which enables pupils to revisit and deepen there knowledge as they progress through the years within their primary education.

Teaching of these essential skills and knowledge within PSHE are taught through three core themes:

    • Health and Well-being
    • Relationships
    • Living in the Wider World

The knowledge acquired enables pupils to reflect on their individuality and value who they are in the ever changing world that they are living in. Within the curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on developing emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

The RSE curriculum is taught as an integral aspect of the PSHE curriculum and teaches pupils about different relationships. This aspect enables pupils to gain an understanding of relationships and how to manage these in modern day Britain. The RSE curriculum also teaches pupils Sex Education which is covered in Upper Key Stage 2 through the statutory aspects of the science curriculum.

    Enhanced Curriculum (including hidden aspects)

At Elsley, many aspects of our PSHE curriculum are also embedded as part of the wider aspects of school life:

    • We aim to empower pupils with a growth mind set in which they are able to build their resilience and grow in confidence through the use of positive language.
    • We encourage pupils to foster a love for learning and embrace challenge.
    • We encourage pupils to develop self-worth by contributing to the school and the wider community.
    • We teach SMSC and British values as a whole school integral approach by putting our ethos and values at the forefront.

    Intent Statement

We hold to a collaborative approach to the evaluation of the impact of our curriculum where this process is not ‘done to’ our staff, but ‘with them’.  In order to judge how successful our curriculum has been designed to promote the learning of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) National Curriculum, pupil outcomes are evaluated against using our PSHE Association primary toolkit, teacher assessment for learning and pupil voice. We evaluate our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum and practices against evidence-based education research, leading subject associations and welcome cross school collaboration to ensure that our curriculum design successfully meets and challenges our pupils.

We aim for our pupils to:

    • Be able to understand and manage their emotions.
    • Have respect for themselves and others.
    • Appreciate difference and diversity.
    • Have a positive self-esteem.
    • Be able to look after their mental health and well-being.
    • Be on their way to becoming healthy, open-minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society.
    • Be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.
    • Recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect and the Rule of law.
    • Be able to develop positive, healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future.
    • Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level.
